Festivals:
Being such a multi-cultural society you will notice quickly that Sri Lanka has many holidays (no.2 in the world for most), which likely will affect your travel plans in some way. Many bring with them some spectacular festivals and photo-opps so try to include some as you go. Although many centre around Colombo (Duruthu Perahera in mid-Jan, Navam Perahera in early Feb, Vel Festival in late July), and Kandy (Esala Poya Parahera in late July), most are celebrated throughout the country. These include Thai Pongal mid-Jan, Independence Day early Feb, Mahashivratri mid-Feb, Sinhala & Tamil New Year mid-Apr, Vesak Poya early May and Diwali in mid-Nov). Christmas & Easter are big occasions too. Of course if you are not into crowds, you have come to the right place.
